Sheckley really could have released the story as four novellas. Still, everyone is allowed to experiment. Some day, when I get around to writing fiction, I'm sure the critique will be as biting, if not more so.
As for zombies, you'd be surprised at how common they actually are. I read a Simon Templar story in F&SF just the other day that also featured zombies (in the traditional Haitian sense). All it would take is some enterprising fellow to combine the Zombie legend with the Vampire legend, and you could really capture the popular interest.
