The praise didn't sound that faint to me, it sounds as if the story's got an awful lot going for it. But then, I'd as soon have four novellas, or more short stories, as one novel.
(oot: and an amazingly modern touch, writing zombies. It sometimes seems to me that they're almost compulsory nowadays.)
