OTOH, Asimov is also right that it's much more socially acceptable in many circles to say that you can't balance your checkbook than it is to say that you're not familiar with Shakespeare -- or, at lower economic levels, with the latest hit television show. There's an undercurrent of distaste for math and science in our culture which is troubling.
