The Pi Man is indeed harrowing. I couldn't stop reading, but I was rather sorry about that until that really most excellent ending.
Avram Davidson does rely a lot on his style. I like it, and I think he brings off Dagon, but if it doesn't work for you, that's understandable. And perhaps in a few years some children will manage to semi release Dagon, and Nesbitian hijinks will ensue.
