I'm not sure about Beauregard, actually. He talks about 'man', but is almost eager to attack most humans. A bit more than most real dogs would be, perhaps. I gather most attack trained dogs are eager for rewards or defense of their human, and Beauregard seems to go a bit further. But then, dogs communicate very well, generally. Perhaps making them word users changed their nature a bit.
Herbert is right about Berbers ftw! A greatly under used people for both fantasy and science fiction.
